The GP that is memorable to me was 1992 British GP.
I was in Keswick and searched for a pub with a TV that was showing it. I found one and watched Nigel Mansell dominate it. (if my memory is correct) his final lap he set the fastest lap 'for the fans'. he was stopped by a track invasion on his parade lap after running down a spectator (who was suitably impressed by being run over by Mansell). during the 'mobbing' of mansell as he was carried away from his car by fans, Damon Hill pulled up in his Brabham next to the crowd of fans after finishing his debut GP. only 2 or 3 of the fans went over to congratulate him. I was very mindful at the time of the fact Nigel's car had been partly developed by Hill (he was Williams test driver at the time) and this was the start of Hills carrer at the time Mansell was at the pinacle of his.
It was an emotional race to watch after following Mansells F1 career from the start.
After TV coverage was finished, I noticed only my mate & i were left in the pub.... it had closed an hour earlier but the landlord left us to watch without disturbing us or asking us to leave. Was a glorious sunshine day..
Another race which always stays in my mind was Monaco also in '92. this wasn't a particulary great race, but mansell led most of the way till a pit stop with a few laps to go... this was probably the most exciting final 3 laps of a race I ever witnessed. Mansell & Senna nose to tail round the streets of Monte Carlo. unforgettable! |
