What if we compile an explanation of navigation methods and show samples of on our web site.

I have a few booklets that Steve W and Wigton have produced sometime ago which could form the basis of the "Navigation Column", with luck it could be a local definitive list which may draw in browsers and possibly new members. What do you think?

I suppose we could ideally have a person maintinin 1 or 2 sections of the website each, I could take general and karting, Dave marshalling and calendar and Gav rallying and circuit?

I don't know, really but what about making the wesite look like the forum?

Should be able to provide a "members only" section or do like other motorclubs do and have a secret hyperlink on the site, a virtual land of narnia if you will.

Getting some ideas together dave mate.

starting from scratch to be fair, maybe pilfer a template to get me going like

. have (lightly) dabbled in cgi's but would be confident enough to offer my services in such an area.

don't forget to include a link to the croft historic rally website... www.crofthistoricrally.co.uk

Currently only a holding page, but the website proper should be live in a few weeks.

dave do you know of any free hosting sites that would be able to cope with teh new SDMC site?

will need a truckload of storage for all the pictures of members etc and a decent bit of bandwidth.

sorry, I don't. I don't think you will find anywhere for free, and besides, it wouldn't be advisable to get free hosting. Free hosting usually comes with adverts, pop ups and can be unreliable. CHR website is hosted by Lycos, costs £28 for a year. check out Lycos.co.uk and click on web hosting for their rates and specs. Also try 123reg.com, I have used them too and are reliable. Its important that the clubs website hosting is reliable. Using free hosting as a library for pictures can be dodgy, most hosts watch for that and may wipe off your files. so prob not worth trying that one either

Yeah, I intend to migrate all the pics and stuff from the old website onto the new one all being well.

The only issue will be the hosting as all of those pics will add up to a fair few megs to be fair.

Of course we can use sites like photobucket but as Dave says I dont know how reliable this will be and the last thing we want is a load of those little white boxes with red crosses in.

But lets cross that bridge when we come to it the main thing is get a site built, tweak it to iron out any teeething probs, bench test it then source a decent host.

Like in the previious post I'm intending to start work properly this weekend on it, having found a suitable template for which to base it on.

Photoshop will be a steep learning curve, but the end result should be quite impresive when its done.(**puts neck on line**)

I hope.

I think most hosting options have a genourous storage and bandwidth. often only a couple of quid per month more can greatly increase storage and bandwidth (tho I don't think the latter will be critical for us)

Don't envy your job of moving all the photo files Gavin. will be like relocating a sweet shop, sweet by sweet!
