Cheap F1 alternativeRyan and I spent an enjoyable day at Donnington Park yesterday watching the UK round of the Superleague Formula. The cars are very close to F1 spec, but all chassis and engines (V12 750bhp) are the same - they certainly have the speed and noise to give a good alternative to F1, but without the expensive tickets and the massive queuing to get in to the track and out again.
Watched race 1 from the Redgate grandstands and then race 2 from the Fogarty Esses where the cars were so loud that the ground felt like it was shaking. Good job I took some earplugs for Ryan and I even wore mine after a few laps of ear-splitting action. There was also a 3rd "dash for cash" race with the top 3 cars from the two proper 45 minute races (2nd with a reverse grid) having a 5 lap sprint with winner takes all prize of Euro 100,000 - this was a great spectators event.
In addition, we had a full supporting race programme which included a round of the FIA Historic F1 championship for F1 cars from 70's and early 80's (superb), plus MX5s, various saloons, single seaters and MSA Superkart championship.
And all of this for £15 adults and kids free entry !!
If there is a UK round of this championship next year, I would thoroughly recommend trying to attend if you want to get the "F1 experience" without having to break the bank (don't forget some ear-plugs)
