Sprints etc

rest of the 2008 season is as follows

Scammonden July 13th (entered)

Elvingon August 2nd (one of my fave's, it's so fast)

Forrestburn Aug 23/24 (clashese with 24 hour race, tough choice to make)

Harewood Sept 20th (amazing atmosphere, feels like a really big event)

Kames Oct 7th (season finale, another long drive).
Road Rally Dave

Let me know the timetable for Scammonden Dam - I've thought about going to watch an event here before, but never have actually been (just driven past the top of the hill a lot on the M62). It's about 50 minutes drive from home for me, so reasonably close.

Will have to check whether I'm supposed to be doing anything else !
club sec

It's motorsport, you shouldn't have to ask her for a day pass.

Send the forum link over to John, at least then he can keep in touch.

How's his Spanish coming along? Does he call the bends like Luis Moya yet?

Scammonden

Gav Taylor

so you basically turn up and pay someone to drive down a country lane??
club sec

And rallying is.............?
Gav Taylor

driving down lots of gravel tracks through the Kings forests very fast
club sec

Which you have done how many times?*

*Gav's glass house damaged in a previous stone throwing incident.
Gav Taylor

I've never travelled to Sweden, Monte Carlo or Turkey to watch people drive down a county lane...I have for the WRC though.

seriously mate just give me £100 and I'll let you drive the back road to bishop as many times as you want!

why pay for something I do for free every day? Down side of living in a city mate
club sec

These days I will pay to make sure there is no one coming the other way, no cyclists or horses and if I do crash a rescue vehicle with a paramedic is guaranteed to be there in under 60 seconds. Just in case the on board extinguishers and flame proof suit are struggling.

PS, seasoned campaigner of many a road rally too.

who told you that??
club sec

Well if they can't get their lazy ass from a standing start to a point no more than half a mile away with zero trafiic to contend with then there is something wrong.
Gav Taylor

very true and on that note I'm off to the lakes..catch up sunday xxx
club sec

xxx!

poof.
Gav Taylor

club sec

been hanging round Brownridge too long, the pair of you need to get a woman.

(I mean one each of course, not the same one),

(well I suppose.............no, best stop now).
Road Rally Dave

Have you done Scammonden before ?
Where do competitors and spectators drive in ?
Does everyone park at the top of the hill (there is a big field) and competitors drive down in convoy to do timed runs back up ?
The aerial photos don't show how steep the hill is - but you would expect a hillclimb to be steep wouldn't you !
club sec

Never been here before, I am told it is steep and 1st and 2nd gear only!
Gav Taylor

best get that sequential gearbox fitted Peacock!

with all due respect its not really a test of man and machine if you never get out of second gear is it!!
Road Rally Dave

I guess it depends on how tall your ratios are in 1st & 2nd..........

Let me know what the event timetable is when you get it - do you do practice runs in morning and then timed in afternoon ?
club sec

That is the norm. Finals due midweek.
steaallan

when is the next local(ish) event on marti
club sec

Elvington (York) August 2nd, Harewood (Leeds) Sept 14th, Scammonden is Huddersfield a week on Sunday.
steaallan

are you or sally entering them
Road Rally Dave

Found this description of the hill and some suggestions how to drive it (not just as fast as possible !):

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/dennisdoyle/scammonden.htm

Wish someone would do descriptions of road rally routes like this (preferable before we had to drive them !)

Wot tyres are you using - have you got an extreme wet weather set up just in case ?
club sec

£ £

I wish
Gav Taylor

a few competitors on the rain lashed xmas stages were using gravels quite sucessfully, something to bear in mind.
club sec

Road class means road tyres.
Gav Taylor

without a paddle mate.
Road Rally Dave

Do you have to use tyres from a set list, because gravel tyres are legal for road use provided they have the correct sidewall markings (I think) ? I find that part worn (no more than about 5mm tread) gravel tyres are more progressive on wet roads because they slide a bit more easily, when road tyres either grip or don't which can lead to a sudden slide.
club sec

List 1 a of the blue book.
Road Rally Dave

I wont bring my SP85s on Sunday then !
Road Rally Dave

Looks like it will be dry on Sunday according to Look North forecast (Yorkshire version)
Road Rally Dave

Have you got your Finals - what is the timetable for Sunday ?

Hopefully I will be there along with Ryan. Is Sally driving as well ?
club sec

Both competing, action starts at 10.
Gav Taylor

good luck to all competing tomorrow!

if in doubt, flat out!!!!
club sec

Many thanks to Road rally Dave and RRR (road rally Ryan) for supporting us today and also being deputy  (and damn good) photographer.

Scammonden dam, J24 on the M62.

31.27 eeconds for me, the video was my fastest run, I fell off the road on the 8th timed run and did a bit of grass cutting- no damage.

club sec

We got 8 runs and it was well worth it, bet it is awful when it rains!

slippy

Have you got any photo's from the day mate
club sec

there are more, would you like to see them??
slippy

Yes please
Road Rally Dave

There would have been even more photos if I hadn't killed the camera's batteries (Martin did say take as many as you want !). I am not so pleased that the top of my baldy head is prominent on a lot of the pictures before I took over photo duties.

There was a wide variety of cars competing from the really quick F3 (?) and Sports 2000 cars through to the mini and MGB. The pictures don't do justice to how steep the hill is.

Great to see Martin & Sally getting loads of runs - think that every competitor had 8 timed runs plus a couple of practice runs. The weather was kind although I was suffering from hay fever in the afternoon after spending all day in long grass.

It was a nice touch that the organisers had sorted a low level fly past by the WW2 Lancaster bomber         - those engines sound superb.

Best value car / driver of the day (apart from Martin when he was sideways on the grass) was the Super 7 style number 40 who laid opposite lock rubber marks on every run.

But as Sally was trying to explain to Martin over lunch - smoothest is fastest.

My baldy head immortalised on YouTube

That Lotus Elan looked superb, I want one.

Elvington this weekend, fortunately for you lot there are few oppurtunities for photos, then again that's what I said about Scammonden.
Road Rally Dave

Can't make it along this weekend due to house commitments (getting new windows).

Good luck to you both. Hopefully the course will be far enough away from the grass for you to stay on the black stuff .......
club sec

Elvington is one of my fave's, nice and open and flowing and possibly the only sprint where I get into 4th gear- it's quick.
club sec

Not the way to do it!

Road Rally Dave

Good Results you two

How do you make the Pug faster for next year ?

Gav Taylor

club sec

Diet, take the sumpguard off, take the hand held extinguisher out, lower the rear suspension and drop wheel size to 13 inches for a start.
